Our society is underpinned by the notion that we are who we are because of past experiences and that our histories are interlaced with our current beings, moulding and shaping us into who we are today. This preconception is not ill-informed, rather it’s quite poignant, especially in this day and age.
As we and our society are ever-changing, the hope is to move towards a more inclusive and accepting discourse. Our heritage has definitely altered us in some sort of way, whether it motivates us to create and cater to a new demographic, or whether it has taught us different philosophies that we want to share, it affects much of what we love, and we do.
So, as we consider ‘heritage’, we are challenged with questions about who we are and how it has differentiated us from those around us. Bringing new meaning to ‘heritage’, we contemplate contemporary approaches to the word in respects to a theatre artist and growing up as part of the diaspora.
In our second issue of The WOW, we interview one of the most recognisable Asian faces in fashion, supermodel SUI HE and converse about the journey she has partaken in and how her heritage has contributed to it. We feature nine inspiring women from around the world, each of whom are celebrating their heritage in their own way, bringing their own unique outlook to drive their personal pursuits and art.
